I'm what some folk euphamistically call "Cuddly" so I tend to play the 'maternal' role there...
I enjoy having mi nipples nipped, it's a wonderful tease...

"so I tend to play the 'maternal' role there"
Are you talkin' about man-boobs?

I see you all carried on without me.
I'm not seeing any directly relevant primate research and, although it was hardly an extensive check, that lack fits with what I recall of footage of encounters. So my best guess would be that the behaviour got added some time with or after the sexual selection for larger breasts (unrelated to actual nursing requirements) in the hominid line.
Naturally if female nipples are going to be involved then male ones are along for the ride too - it being harder to separate structures than to do the same for each when there isn't active selective pressure to split function. (NB men can even breast feed if the right hormonal activation sequence is followed.)

What, they could actually produce milk? That seems amazing!

It's not the scientific links I had before (I'm not great at re-finding the same things and can't remember where I may have posted them either!), but it will serve for anecdotal examples:

Hmm... That alteration was another falsehood - the telling of which seems to be normal for TPTB round here (and even despicably regarded as virtuous in their warped self-serving morality). You'll have to google or whatever for yourself.

Or email me your link, SEF, and I'll put it on one of my own posts.

Oooh, aiding & abetting a pre-mod!!! Isn't that some sort of hanging offence?
(Mind you, since we are all hanging around anyway....)
