Good Time to Quit?

Here's an immediate reason - every single one of those things costs you money - money which you could be spending properly instead...

Actually Alex, it wasn't alcohol that became my next addiction, I already had a weakness for that
I began using hootoo more. When I needed a cigarette I went upstairs to the PC instead... Now I am addicted to hootoo instead

This was my first attempt (coz I really still enjoyed smoking when I gave up)... I am determined it will be my last!

Over 25 years smoking
I've got enough money for my needs so that isn't enough of a reason for me. I managed to smoke when I was on incapacity benefit and when I was unemployed
Lack of anywhere except the street to smoke at 3:00AM may be enough for me. Next week when I'm off work I'll go and see the and then I'll be ready to try and quit when we lose our smoking room
Congrats to both GalaxyBabe and lil ole me, it is hard to give up when you've been an addict for a long time

I don't see the point in stopping unless you actually want to. If you're not sure about it, then it won't work for long. You'll be there thinking, "do I want this cigarette or not? I don't know.... I'll just light this fag while I think about it.... Uh-oh: I'm smoking... well, I might as well finish it now I've started it.... Oh, I wish I hadn't smoked that; now I feel really guilty."
So then you'll be smoking without even enjoying it. If you're *going* to smoke, you might as well savour it rather than chucking it down your lungs for the hell of it. Otherwise, what a thankless activity!
I stopped smoking because I didn't want to be a bad influence on my younger brother and sister. Besides, it was getting in the way of doing things, and I wanted to spend my money on other hobbies instead. I was in a foul mood, on and off, for two weeks, and then I improved into the grumpy sod you see today.

well my usual state, as with many things is both wanting and not wanting to
add that to my lack of willpower and you have someone who has given up lots of times (but not in the last 10 years or so)

There's always a point in stopping - just don't start again. If you don't enjoy smoking you've won half the battle...

Thank you
I think there's a difference between being an addict - and having a habit.
Look upon it as a habit you want to break - rather than an addict who "can't" give up.
You have a lot of help on offer - and you can always ring the NHS direct quitline for tips & advice.
I meant what I said about you being nicer to , I'll volunteer to prove that if you've given up smoking by the time we meet.

Hello Kitty
If you want, I can be your quitting buddy
(the boy and I are planning on giving up, but the slow way...something about Cold Turkey and Patches sounds like it won't work for me)
So it may be a couple of weeks yet, but I will be ditching the ciggies as well...so if you need someone to be cranky with, I'm you're man...girl...whatever

GalaxyBabe, now I have an incentive
hiya Tanzen
sounds like a plan, I don't think I'll give up until we lose our smoking room here so that'll probably be a week or 2

I'm planning on buying a carton (10 packs ) and that will be my last 10 packs. The theory is that once I hit the last 4 or 5 packs I will start rationing myself, thus smoking less, thus less pain when I actually go through with it...the boy has quit before but I never have, and I'm a little worried as to whether or not I can actually do it ?

the quittings not the hard part, its the staying quit
I think after 6-8 weeks is when most people who fail to quit give in and start again
cutting down can work but its easy to let the amount you're smoking creep back up again
so long as you set a definite time (eg when the carton runs out) when you'll give up completely
oh, and don't do what I usually end up doing
give up for a while, have 1 cigarette, then decide I've failed and start up again

to both of us
must be careful about thinking out loud in my journal, this is how I ended up becoming vegetarian
I just wish to clearly and catagorically state that I have no intention of giving up

Yes,
I don't think you should have to give up ...apart from the fact that everyone should be allowed *at least one* vice...giving up the wine would really mess up your "patron saint of drinking for the benefit of others" status
