Happy Dead Elvis Day!!
Baron_Shatturday Started conversation Aug 16, 1999
Yes, today is the day on which Elvis Aaron Presley (a.k.a. "The King") died 22 years ago (1977). How are you spending it?
I've been doing my usual stuff (watching television, playing about on the computer, playing about with myself) and I plan on going out and eating lots of fatty food (Grecian Gyros, full of lamb and feta cheese!) and indulging myself in giving extraneous advice to nubile young women.
An entity on a mailing lyst I'm on (das Lyst!), has sent me several interesting links of commemoration, including How Elvis is like Jesus, and the First Presleyian Church of Elvis as well as a group of people who believe that they will eventually be able to communicate with extra-terrestrial Elvis fans!
Personally, I think Elvis was human- though Divinely inspired. What do YOU think?

I think you're correct there. It's all in the hype. People, being the herd-like animals they are, will generally do what they think other people are doing- and then rationalize it as being perfectly logical and reasonable.
I'd better watch out! I'll talk myself into misanthropy again!

go right ahead and talk away!!!.....the thing is there are thousands of greats out there but in those thousands very few are given the opporunity to enjoy the fame of Elvis, not because he was so much better but soley because he happened to be in the right place at the right time

You're really quite right. I know hundreds (literally) of excellent musicians and songwriters who don't stand a chance of making any money off of it because they don't have the marketing skills (or the marketing machine, or the manager who has either one or the other). That's the sad part- bugger "fame", that's really just a pain in the butt- or as I've told friends, "a noxious side-effect of being a successful performer or artist".
Money is much better than fame. However, I think the net will eventually give people a much better oppourtunity to market their own stuff, and make money off of it. Maybe not as much money as the Beatles, for example- but enough money to live on- and that's all that really matters, being able to make a living doing what you want... At least in my book.

you are quite right .......i know that most musicians are quite happy to just play where they can whether they make money or not but given the chance they would take the money in a heartbeat....the thing is that unlike anything else if you have music in your blood it is not something you can just put down, you MUST do it whenever and wherever possible.....it is a shame though that so many of them are never heard and i do hope that through the internet that will change...i know i have spoken to one musician online that has even sent me some of his original stuff to listen to and if it were available in the stores i would buy it in a heartbeat because it is great!!!.......if it were not for the internet i would of never heard any of it and that would of been a shame...

Yep. I intend to start burning my own CD's right here- and put them up for sale on amazon.com, as well as printing up copies of my poetry book for sale. All you have to do is send them 5 copies to hold, and they'll put your stuff in their inventory. Then it's just a matter of getting people to go there to get it.

Hokay! I'll give an address to everyone on the mailing list- both of us! hehehe. It'll have to wait till I actually get the copies made, though... could be a month or so.

Yes, we're a lot of toe-jammers! Hehehehe. I guess everybody can't be the music-maker, but we need our affecionados to pay the bills!

I've put it (the Fenny-Fish) in it's place of honor!
Your husband is lucky- some of my friend's wives get all bent out of shape when they jam at home. Then they get even more bent out of shape when they jam out!
Needless to say, these marriages don't last too long... Looks like yours is going to be O.K., though!

glad to find the fenny fish in its rightful place at last
call me crazy but i rather enjoy the sounds of the jam sessions and find it kind of cool how when they are done in a club somewhere everyone else is enjoying it too.

I won't call you crazy for that! Especially seeing as you're married to one of us! I will, however, call you quite mad for reading all my techno-posts (in the coolest, most scientific kind of way, of course!).

msmonsy Posted Aug 19, 1999
well you see i can handle reading them for the reason that i am forced to live with a techno babbling fool who uses me as his sounding board on many many occasions
