Pod is a futuristic, 3D racing game set on one of Jupiter's many moons, Io. In the game, Io has become a very prosperous planet for humans, but a terrible virus has been unleashed and has destroyed practically everything there. The player is one of the few that remain on the doomed satellite, and must choose and race a super high-tech car in a race for the last seat on the last remaining escape pod because the one person who wins the race will be the only one to get off the planet and survive.

Pod was released in about 1996 in France, the UK, Germany, and the US. I had one of the very earliest versions. It came bundled with a computer I got around that time: a big-screen computer/television with a wireless keyboard. What was special about the computer was that it had an MMX graphics card, one of the finest to date. The game was one of the few that were made for it. It has absolutely stunning graphics, even by today's standards (in my opinion, anyway). The computer was crap, though. Had tons of problems.

I still have the disc, as I may have mentioned earlier. Well, I do want to play it again, but I have a Vista computer set up at home (I'm on a trip right now) and it's not compatible. Wasn't compatible with my XP either. So I've done a little research (many thanks to Bandie's Racing Board!!) and have a few ideas on how to get it running on my non-stone age PC (smiley - tongueincheek). Basically one just installs software that mimics different graphics cards that pod can understand and relate to (which you can download from the Net for free) and a couple of other patches (such as dgVoodoo, a glide wrapper suite), set a few settings on your graphics card, turn on the 16-bit (which Vista doesn't have....smiley - erm) and Voila!

(most of what I said in the above paragraph is just guesswork as to what one really has to do in order to get pod running on their computer...I really have very little idea what I'm talking about smiley - run)

On top of all this, I was thinking this morning and I decided to search for pod on h2g2. There's no entry for it! Once I get to playing it again, I'll recall more about it (that counts as research for a Guide entry!) and hopefully I'll be able to write a decent entry on it. Yay!

I was thinking along those lines when I had another idea! People who (still) play pod are scattered across the globe (well, at least across North America and Europe)! Maybe some of them are on hootoo!
Maybe *gasp* we could start a group! (I know I'm getting way too excited about this...please forgive mesmiley - biggrin) So this is a call to all poddies (podheads, podders, etc) out there! Reply if you dare...
