h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Tomorrow I start a new job... the kind of job I've always wanted and never been able to find (well, actually I'd really like to be a professional rock climber but the webmaster job will do for now ). The pay isn't great but hopefully I'll enjoy it; and enjoying life is far more important than money!

The last few years have been strange... but hopefully this is a turning point in my life. Going back into full time work will be hard but the challenge will be good for me.

Things I'll miss? Not daytime TV, that's for sure. But I'll miss lying in my hammock in the sun... I've found the perfect place for it, in a birch tree in our back garden. (Up the tree actually. I haven't grown out of climbing trees yet )

I'm doing what I enjoy, which is cool... (I enjoy making websites. I'm a geek. So? ) and the other people there are really nice.

It's the first time I've had a 9-5 job five days a week for... well, ever. I thought I'd find it really tiring but so far I've coped fine.

What are you doing nowadays?

Yay! Hmm... that reminds me... I need to go get a job...

I'm not doing a whole lot of interesting stuff nowadays-- I graduated from high school on the 31st of May... so I guess that's relatively important. Mostly since then I've been doing a lot of chores around the house-- because my mom is incredibly stressed and I feel like being unusually helpful-- and gardening. (Yep, my secret passion. I like getting dirt under my nails. ) That's about it, except today my friend and her boyfriend and I went to a park nearby that I've never been to. The park itself doesn't look very large or interesting... until you go far away from the main road. Then it turns into forest for acres and acres-- and we hiked through it all for about two and a half hours. Tons of fun. I think I'll go back again...

Jobs are useful... and especially good if you can find one you enjoy doing

The park sounds cool... there's a large area near where I live called The New Forest... (there's nothing particularly new about it, but it's big )... I occasionally go there and cycle around a bit, which is nice. But I grew up in the mountains in Wales and so am used to miles and miles of wild mountainside, which I miss a bit.

Going outside is fun ... if I can tear myself away from the computer.

That's been my problem... I've been connected at the hip with h2g2 since I got out of school and I haven't done much else with my free time. So the outdoors stuff was a welcome change. Must go outside more... *jots that down so she'll remember*... probably back to Landis Woods, and hopefully with even more people.

Jobs... my parents don't seem to understand the whole concept of enjoyment of them. I mean, I could get a job anywhere, but I really want to do something that I wouldn't mind doing until I go to uni in August. Probably apply at a bookstore or something... hmmm.

The trick is to have a mobile computing device with a wireless modem... then you can use it outdoors

Peregrin, I'm happy to hear you are happy, I haven't heard from you in a while. That webmastering stuff at least sounds to me like a job with some kind of satisfaction, not like working as a cashier or bank teller or car park attendant! Creativity and all! I like working on my computer, I would love it to be able to be online more! But I still go out a lot, I have my garden with lots of really fascinating plants and much wildlife - it's a mini-jungle! I love tending my wild plants and every day I see something new. And every once in a while I go out and hike in the bush or the mountains. And three days a week I'm off to the gym to jiggle heavy bits of iron around and to kick the sawdust out of their punching bag. I also at the moment have work that I like hugely, though I'm not entirely succeeding at making a living out of it ... but I'm gonna persist until I get really good at it! Might have to spend a few whiles in between working in a car park to make money, though...

Hmmm. Picked up a few job applications today. Haven't filled them out yet... don't particularly want to, either...I'd prefer to just sit and work on my book-story-thingie till forever. Sigh.

Congrats on the new job. I've just got a job in Specsavers in Newport in the Isle Of Wight.

It was my first job interview in 4 years (why do opticians always want to sit you in the big black chair for interviews? They're scary).

Oh well start in a week and a half, haven't got a suit yet, haven't moved there yet! I hope it goes as well as your job. So what are you actually doing? Something computer related I take it.

Hiya all! I haven't had much time to go on h2g2 recently but I'm sneaking in a bit of h2g2ing in the office right now !

I wish I had a wild jungle type garden, and bush and mountains, next to me here... I pine for the countryside... I drove through the New Forest today, but it isn't the same, it's choc-a-bloc full of tourists . But I had an ice cream

Hi SallyM! The IoW is really nice, you should enjoy yourself there... it's difficult to find work there though, so congrats on your new job! Have you come across Bluebottle on h2g2? He's from the Isle of Wight, and is very keen (extremely) on the place!!

Yup, I'm a webmaster now. So I sit around writing webpages. Which is fun, especially since I got a nice leather ergonomic office chair that whizzes up and down and rocks back and forth and rolls around and... you get the picture.

Oooh! I love those kinds of chairs!

And SallyM, he's not joking about BB being extremely keen on the Isle of Wight... ( for BB if he's reading this).

Yeah I was looking on stuff about the IOW, did't realise there were that many piers. I've said hello to BB so maybe we'll meet up?

Good luck with the application forms Amy (don't know how to do the cross thingy sorry). Remember you don't want to work for them because you need the money, you think that they are a great company with which you feel you can contribute and make even better.

I saw a chair on 'This Morning' (sorry I'm not watching the BBC) yesterday which had a fridge in one arm, a holder for the remote control in the other. Fully automatic reclining AND massaging. Please can I have one, please, please, I'll be your best friend. Though races with office chairs are soo much fun

Mmmm, fridge and remote.... you could add a motor to the wheels so you have an advantage on office racing too
