What is it about some people that makes them gravitate to where other people are having a good time, for the sole purpose of making everyone there miserable?
They're on IRC, in Usenet, everywhere. They pop in, flinging around random insults aimed at people they haven't even given themselves a chance to get to know. Do they think it makes them look cool? Do they even know that the 'shock' value quickly turns to just another petty annoyance?
Or are they just so desolate that they don't want anyone else to have any peace?
They are, in a word, pathetic.
*sigh*

I know what you mean. When it happens on a live chat it can be really annoying as the whole conversation is then aimed at putting shit back on the lamer, and everyone forgets what they were talking about.

Heh.. At least on IRC, most of the more savvy ops will just place the user on +b or set the channel +m. That way they get what they deserve... no responses whatever.
(On DALnet, for example, a +b user cannot send to channel or change nicks, even if they are allowed to remain. )

Ah, that's mean. But what if you're on a simple Java Chat or something like that. Am I being pedantic? I know what you mean, and I will not try to make myself look like a lamer.

I very seldom find myself on those things, and when I do, it's not for long.
Also, it depends on what kind of java chat. There are some that connect you to IRC from a web page. In those cases, you just hope some nice op on channel will .. erm.. 'fix' the problem.

Somebody did this to me a few weeks back on a page that was under construction...
I got so ticked off that I wrote a long forum about the way it sucked! I don't get it! I really don't!!

Sometimes it's a newbie that is just following the behaviour that they've seen, hoping to fit in, and eventually figure out that they can have a lot more fun (and friends) if they outgrow it.
Others just don't get it and refuse to learn. They're very small, sad, pathetic people in my book.

Heh.. *nods* ... Yeah... They think they're impressing folks.. and they are in a way, but not the way they were hoping for.

I just felt I should bring this back up towards the top. It may be just me, but I've noticed a certain .... element creeping into h2g2 and I'm not at all sure I like it. In fact, I'm fairly possitive I'm not exactly fond of it at all.
Am I just losing my sense of humour, or has anyone else noticed this?

You're quite right. They're taking themselves far too seriously and making demands and rude accusations. Really delightful!

Anonymouse Posted Feb 17, 2000
Perhaps I should be glad to know it's not just me, but I'd still rather h2g2 remained the open-minded place it had been. I'm not saying stagnate, but there's no reason to get nasty just to evolve. *sigh*

I don't think that there's much chance of it becoming not open-minded.
I guess that it's like at any party, there'll be a few loud mouthed boors making noise, who everyone eventually decides to ignore and get back to having fun.
cheer up 'nonnie, here have a from me!

'an a fish from me...
I gotta agree with your point. And I always wish there were some way of telling these folks that they would have more fun if they would pay attention to the focus of the group they are joining, and take part in it, rather than 'doing their own thing' whether or not it fits. or worse, TRYING not to fit.
It's sorta like if someone comes to a symphony in a clown suit, honking a horn, and wonders why people are offended. Or to a backyard barbecue in formal clothes and complaining about the paper plates. Both the party giver AND the guest that doesnt fit in are being cheated.
*sigh*
Just because it's 'only' virtual reality doesnt mean they arent spoiling the party...now how do you tell them that? and that THEY might have more fun too if they didn't do it.

I confess that I, myself, have been guilty of that, and have moderated my approach. Unless around Someone's Royal Highness.
