I've decided to stay completely away from the political threads for my own sanity. As I've said elsewhere, I don't expect everyone to see the world my way. Far from it. I come to hootoo to get different viewpoints, and I learn a lot here. When the discussions are polite and reasoned, the exchange of information can be incredible. I'm well aware of the shortcomings of the American media; I understand that in many cases we hear exactly what our government wants to hear. So this site is a wonderful place to see what's going on in the minds of the rest of the world.
On the other hand, when people start making cases along the line of Americans deserving "so-called" atrocities like 9-11 because we're a nation of greedy, selfish warmongers, it makes me crazy. Or comparing body counts in various fights, like it's okay for the killing to continue until the scales even out on the number of deaths.
How can ANY event that kills 3000+ people be a "so-called atrocity"? I just can't get my mind around the concept. Doesn't matter who dies, or who does the killing. It's an atrocity, pure and simple. And the thought that anyone could think otherwise literally sickens me.
So, no more. I've cut back on the political threads before, then wandered back in when things quieted down a bit and the discussions got rational again. But it's just not worth the aggravation anymore. I was literally so angry last night I felt like I was going to throw up, and that's just not healthy. When I want world opinion, I'll go to the various international news sites.
You don't get the interaction with other people and their viewpoints, but you also don't get treated like you deserve to die because of the country you were born in.

I keep telling everybody who doesn't want to hear it that todays frontline does not run between rich and poor, between colours and races, nor along historical lines of who's ancestors done who's ancestors wrong.
Todays frontline runs between those who have compassion, and those who don't.
And that frontline runs slap bang across all the traditional divides.
I think that came out very well in the discussion you refer to. I find this hatred oozing out of every letter sickening too.

I just can't understand how people can treat the loss of human life so callously. If terrorists from the US had commited that same act against some other country, I'd be just as horrified. More so, actually, because I would feel a sense of collective guilt about the deaths.
I'm probably not expressing this very well, but I think you get the general idea, Delicia. Thanks for the reply!

I can understand what you're saying, dear. I love to argue, it's how I some to grips with varying sides of discussions, and figure out where I stand. I don't mind losing an argument if I was wrong, because it's a learning experience, isn't it?
But when you're trying to have a conversation with people who are so close-minded it's sickening is frustrating to say the least. And when they decide to throws personal prejudices into the mix, as if it's some sort of justification for anything that goes on, you can't help but feel angry...

It's usualy about pointing out the splinter in the neighbours eye while busily papering over the cupboard with own skellingtons inside. Scuse mixed metaphor

Hiya guys!
I've blown off the worst of the now, but I've stuck to my decision to stay out of those threads. I come to hootoo to have fun and learn, not to be abused. Those dear, misguided souls can rant and rave all they'd like, I just choose not to listen!
Thanks for the support, both of ya!
