Marcel Proust

I have recently started re-reading Alain De Botton's 'How Proust can change your life'. The first read, was years ago. Loaned from a public library. Three weeks, two reminders and a £23.40 fine prompted me to buy my own copy, which I did last weekend for £3.99... a bargain from Waterstones!
In this book, Alain (who I was pleased to meet in Brighton at his new book launch 'The art of travel'), discusses how the Monty Phython team had a sketch where contestants had to sum up Proust's work of seven volumns, in 15 seconds. This because Proust used 30 pages to describe how he tosses and turns before he goes to sleep... It's a long book.
I was walking along the seafront this evening, and realised that I was bored... not irritatingly bored (like a small child in a car) just concious of noticing the seconds tick by... every one of them, tick, tick tick... and that's only three (and I even bet you read those fast). My point is, if you are bored - then you will write bored and include all sorts of things that you suddenly notice, which is very good because that's what writing is all about. I would suggest any budding writer that is bored... go for a walk and think about every single second and describe what is happening, because it is happening and it was happening before! You just didn't notice.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
