h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I have just bought a horrible ornament. It's the ugliest thing I have ever seen, I wish you could see a photo of it. It consists of a monkey sitting on a turtle's back. The monkey is mean-looking and emaciated with wide, staring eyes and ears that stick out. Its hair is brownish yellow with dark brown streaks. Its long, thin tail is looped around the turtle's throat and it's using both hands to pull its tail tighter. The turtle is dark green with a pink shell. Its head is pulled up by the monkey's tail and its pink tongue shows as it gasps for air. The turtle is crawling on yellow sand. The whole piece is ceramic, about 20cm tall. I look at it and wonder "Why?". Do you have anything as ugly, or do you know the story behind the monkey and turtle?

i also have this ceramic ornament. i think it's stamped with portugal on the bottom, but i love it. it's so unusual and i've never seen or heard of it before. i've had mine for about 10-12 years; i got it from the storage basement of a florist shop where i worked in texas. they hated it, so i took it. i'm not sure mine is the same colors as you've described-the monkey's green and brown and definitely maniacal. anyway, nice to know i'm not alone.
