Be Nice to Me--I Gave Blood Today! ;-)
the Shee Started conversation Feb 17, 2002
Hello all... I'm rather happy.. I gave blood this morning for the first time and ran into some problems, but I'm fine now. My veins didn't pop up like they wanted, to find the vein, and I'm not sure what happened then--the nurses thought perhaps the vein had collapsed, or perhaps that she hadn't stuck it (?). I had to wear a blood pressure cuff, but I bled decently once it got started.
I still feel a little funny; rather weak... Don't know. I got lightheaded sitting there; that's the first time I've been lightheaded for a while.
Anyway, I'm good and feeling very proud of myself.

We think it's something to do with the fact that we both love each other far more than is probably good for us.

Hey Shee, did you recover quickly from the giving blood? I only gave blood once before, in which instance I didn't get lightheaded, but I'm quite used to getting needles stuck in my veins because I was very sick for very long and got lots and lots of blood tests. Luckily I got big surface veins on my arms, probably from the bodybuilding, so there's no problem with where to stick the needle. Anyways, I'm very healthy now, and my brain doc says I can give blood starting in March, so I'm gonna! (I probably have some of the healthiest blood in the province.) Like Poet indicated, its something that can make a very big, very good, difference to some person who's in need! Thanks for inspiring me!

*has an abject phobia of, and allergy to, needles*

I also had a great dread of needles for most of my life. But with my recent health problems it stopped. I got injected so frequently, and got blood drawn a lot as well, that I just couldn't afford to care about it very much any more. Also, when you're close to dying and in immense pain, an injection on top of that doesn't seem that serious any more.
Anyways from personal experience: getting blood drawn is, relatively speaking, not painful at all. Compared to an injection ... when they inject something into me, they push the needle in deep and force the stuff in the syringe into the muscle and tissues and that hurts a lot. But when they draw blood, they only make a small opening in a vein, insert a needle and then let the blood flow out. That's not even remotely as invasive as an injection. I'll face that any time. Like I said, I'm lucky though that I have prominent veins. If the person drawing the blood has to jab around with the needle to find the vein, it's not very pleasant.

The bruise is finally disappearing.
Hey Njan, I have a friend who is deathly afraid of needles... And blood... And *all* those things that occur when you give blood. They just stuck her finger to test her blood, and she passed out cold.
No, I don't like needles. Not at all. More psycho-somatic problems I guess... It was a lot worse for me to wait and think about it than to just *do* it. Do you know what I mean? Anticipation was the hard part; once I closed my eyes and just didn't think about what was actually happening, I was okay. Hmm..
Oh yes, and that day I was extremely tired. I could just walk around for a while, and afterwards I was breathing hard. It wasn't difficult, it was just odd. I could tell that I didn't have quite the oxygen carrying capacity then. The next day wasn't quite right too, but I walked like five miles that day (spent the day downtown)--most people have told me that by the second day they are totally recovered. I was still breathing hard and for longer after a bit of exercise. I don't know; it wasn't bad at all now that I look back.

(Hello, I am now gatecrashing one of YOUR forums, HAR HARHAR!!!)
"Hammy of Hamster" and I went to give blood onnn....Thursday, they wouldnt let me donate (due to the M.E. *doh*, but I had free orange squash and cream crackers anyway ) and when they put the needle in Hammy a huge spirt of blood went across his t-shirt and face
. I didnt see it though coz I was being talked to by a doctor, but he enjoyed it
Did you get a sticker??? I was bored so started collecting and sticking them to him, but he got annoyed....
Well done

Truly Suz, if I had known you would have taken it so difficultly, I would have never done it! (I would have just started up a different forum )
And you know what else?--that's really gross!
Yes, a sticker that said "I gave blood", and another one that said "first-timer" or something like that. But I still managed to get the nurse who couldn't find my vein the first time off.

Nope, not at all. Sorry for coming off that way... again...
Just terrible, aren't I?... I don't tell people that I like off. (Unless they do things I don't agree with..
And then I try to make it so it isn't "telling off"...) And anyway, I like you.
*didn't want to confuse or -anything-*
I was looking for the hungover smiley and couldn't find it in the little time I had. So I gave up and deleted my smileys. Oh well.
