His crimes seem to have been:
Young
Drunk
In the wrong place at the wrong time
The more i read up on this, the more convinced i am & so it seems are "expert" people. It seems highly likely he was used for political purposes.
The more people who send that petition to Governor Taft, the more likely it is that he will become such a thorn in their side that they will end up releasing him rather than cause an international incident by executing him.
Technical note: You have to use an online form to contact the Taft guy, it is designed only for US citizens (what?! You mean there is human life outside the USA?), so put in a state, i chose "OH" at random. You may need to wiggle your phone code about too.
