First Tigers game of the season...

This is it. The season has officially started, and the Glasgow Tigers are currently tied leaders of the BSL Div 2 North. BUt that's because no other teams in that division played this weekend, and we drew 6-6 to East Midlands Saxons.

Sunday, April 21, 2002. Glasgow Tigers travelled to Boston, Lincolnshire (a mere 7 hour bus ride) to face the newly formed East Midlands Saxons.
Kick-off at 2:30pm meant that we had to leave Glasgow at 6am to be there in time. Not an ideal time to start out. We'd probably been on the road for several hours before any of the East Midlands crew woke up at all.
Anyways, the game started, all was fine, and on our first posession, we scored on a run play off the left side. I botched the extra point snap, so we had a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter.

East midlands soon replied, though, with a couple of good plays and a good kick-off return, and it took them just a few minutes to even out the score.

I guess it showed that it was the first real game of the season for both teams, as there wer a lot of mistakes, and a lot of turnovers all throughout the game. And none of the teams were able to capitalise on the other teams mistakes. Fumbles, interceptions, penalties (I think East Midlands had about 12 penalties for the same thing during the course of the game) and stalled drives were how the game went on for the remaining three quarters.

Final score: Glasgow Tigers 6 - 6 East Midlands Saxons

Good to be back on the field, though.

smiley - smiley Just look it from the bright side. When they are visiting your team, you will have the advantage of playing home and being on the roll.

Well, yes, that's true. For the return game, they are the ones who need to make a 7 hour bus trip to get to where they have to play, so we'll have the edge there (hopefully)..smiley - smiley

How goes it, what with being the center of attention? Heh. Are you coping with the extra strain?

Well, kind of. I had a pretty good first game, as the Saxons didn't play with a nose tackle. That meant that I was pretty much left alone to concentrate on gettign the snaps right.smiley - smiley HOwever, we played our second game this past weekend, down in Staffordshire, and after about 10 minutes into the first quarter, they started playing with a 5-man defensive line, which included a nose tackle, and that got a bit much towards the end of the half. Throw in some blitzing linebackers into that mixture, and we had our hands full on the O-line.
Could have done better, but I guess I did okay. Moved out to Guard in the second half, though. Just to get a break. The nose tackle was a 350-pound mountain of a man, so I felt a tad small.smiley - smiley

We lost the game last weekend by 31-6, but at least the Staffordshire Surge had a better organised post-game bar and serving of food than the Saxons, who ran out of food after about 5 minutes...
