I heard this morning that Carrol O'Connor and John Lee Hooker both passed away this week. What a drag of a way to start my day.
Carrol O'Connor was best known as the cantakerous Archie Bunker on the 70's sitcom All in the Family. He was always (as Archie) making fun of or putting down minorities, hippies, bums, Jews, Chinese...you name it, he had a derogatory name for it. But beyond all that, he was really just a man who loved his family, worked hard to support them, and was never afraid to speak his mind. For me, the moment that showed how Archie truly felt was the episode where he was trying to roughhouse with his daughter, Gloria, and she said "Daddy, stop treating me like a child. I'm not your little girl any more." Well....Archie's face dropped, his eyes got all puffy, and he looked at her and said "Don't you never tell me that." Having a daughter of my own, I know exactly where that sentiment comes from.
On a comical note, I think one of my favorite "Archie Moments" camr during one of his theological 'discussions' with someone about women. He said "God created man in His own image. He made woman from a rib. That's a spare cut."
And as for John Lee Hooker, the best way to know him is to listen to his music. His blues style influenced to many of today's artists, my favorite being Eric Clapton. His deep-throated vocals always had a way of getting down into your soul.
