Pavilhão Chinês

Post 1

Pavilhão Chinês (the Chinese Pavillion) is towards the top end of the Bairro Alto, on Rua Dom Pedro V, 89. One of my favorite bars worldwide. The previous owner ran a shop and also put together eclectic collections, including toy soldiers, model trains, military uniforms, hats and teacups; they're all on display scattered throughout the three main rooms and the hallways. It's as tacky as it sounds. A visit there is a journey into the history of Lisbon's last two centuries. Somehow the ambience conveys the excitement of Brazilian colonization mixed with Anglophone orientation in the early 20th Century mixed with the more recent awakening of a traditionally melancholic city. There's nothing more relaxing, after sampling from the wide selection of drinks, than playing billards with friends on the beautiful tables. Even if I'm in Lisbon for just one day I don't miss the chance to stop in. Don't miss the outlook over Lisbon's baixa district as you climb the hill to the bar.
