h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Hmm, let me see... I've had 3 bosses all in all, not counting my MSc thesis supervisor, so I hardly qualify for a "boss expert"! Which may explain my confusion on the subject "what makes a boss good boss"!

The first one was the nasty kind - always trying to put people down, rub their noses in the puddle on the carpet and show how smart he was. The Bossy Bastard type. Hell to work with, especially since he insisted on having staff meetings every single morning!

The second one was Plain Bossy type! He provided money, so we felt like little Scrooges in the lab, swimming in a pile of gold coins, placing whatever orders we liked and always getting the fanciest equipment to play with. He seldom wanted to come down to our level to discuss plain lab matters, which was fine, since he knew next to nothing, having been far from research for ages. But if he got an idea in his head it had to be done his way, no matter what! And it didn't help waiting for couple of weeks and trying to discuss it again, hoping that he had changed his mind. No, he remembered and stuck to his opinion for years!

Boss number three - the Disorganised, Hold my Hand type. Oh my! That's a real Monster! She needs help with everything, she likes to chat about personal things and be friendly, she can't organise her won work, let alone the whole bunch of people working for her. The Disorganised type always has two minds about everything, can't take a simple decision and refuses to accept that she's paid to do that. Can't provide money so we are spending half the time writing grant applications. And she wants your fullest support for even the smallest thing like the phrasing of the sentences or taking a file downstairs to the administration.

While I worked with the Bossy Bastard I hated it! Then I moved to the Plain Bossy one and I thought that was the worst. Now I have to cope with the Disorganised type and I can't stand it... So I wonder is it so, that the worst ever type of boss is the Current one?

Oh, well... May be it's time for a before I meet the Boss again....
