I would say that that was very cruel and cowardly. I honestly don't believe that humans are capable of true evil. Because I don't think humans are actually that clever.
The Devil is cruel, but he is a mythological figure. And it is only humans who have totally lost their sense of humanity (psychopaths, etc) who can truly be considered evil, I think. Since they have forfeited their right to be considered human.
