Obscenities - what are people really trying to say?
nuttyguy Posted Sep 27, 2000
Jar, makes some very good points. Obscentities are a cultural phenomenon. I understand that there are many native american cultures whose language doesn't consider natural body parts or acts to be obscene. What they use as a put down is more along the lines of calling you a liar.
The use of cursing is for shock, letting off steam, what? Certain cuss words are so prevalent that they no longer get anyone's attention. Does anyone have suggestions for words or phrases that could be used that aren't obscene yet attention grabbing?

How about racial cleansing? I find that pretty offensive as a phrase and a euphimism...

I take no offense at the langauge you used, its a question of context and the context in which you have used colorful words is to me valid. I thought you might find the postings in http://www.h2g2.com/F647?thread=75144&skip=0&show=20 intresting. Happy:-P
