After removing an apparently useless driver (for a generic 2-button PS/2 mouse - the driver that works completely is a generic 3-button serial mouse), the X server refused to start, and also refused to stop attempting to start, so I wasn't able to use even a virtual terminal. I also had no idea how to turn off graphical login, and I was wanting to reconstitute the single / partition into /, /usr, and /home (because fsck runs quicker at init like that). So I decided to reinstall from scratch. I knew I could probably use rescue mode to disable graphical login, but I didn't know how - I don't even know how to mount any of the partitions because the device files (hd*) don't appear in /dev in rescue mode!
The big problem was not that I was losing lots of data, but that it wasn't my hard drive, and the owner (my dad) needs Windoze installed as well - so a dual-boot system is necessary. I don't want to have to reinstall the whole thing just to get LILO on the MBR, so a boot disc will do for Linux for now. Windoze boots straight from the MBR.
Hopefully I'll have this fixed within a week - but tips are welcome.
