A Hockey Thanksgiving...Again

Post 1

Once again, I find myself at a Thanksgiving hockey tournament with my two kids, playing at two different levels on our local travel team, at a major venue, in the championship game on Sunday. We could have lost today, and gone home tomorrow, beating the traffic, but no, they just have to win. Now we have to stay late for their games, which will either result in taking home a championship banner to be proudly displayed at our home rink, or a cheesy plaque saying; Thanks for playing, sorry you came in second place. Good effort though. Rubbish.

As they sleep now (how they can do this is beyond me, I'm a nervous wreck) they are no doubt dreaming of hoisting that banner, having that medal placed around their necks and skating off the ice as champions. Having been here many times before, and having watched them watch another team celebrate the final victory, I hope those dreams come true. My goalie has been there many times now, as champion and as runner up, but my defense-man (who is a girl) has yet to hoist a banner. I hope the two of them can have that honor tomorrow, each on their own team.

We shall see!

(At least they both won, preventing one from being annoyed with the other!)

What a day! My boy (goalie) took the ice for the final game with his team as number one, having swept the tournament up to this point. The game started badly with two quick goals against, putting the boys down 2-0. At the end of the second period, they turned it on. Scoring 3 goals, one of which was on a 5 on 3 penalty kill, putting them up by one going into the third. From that point on, my boy was a brick wall, stopping 14 shots on goal in the third to seal the championship. So far this season, he is undefeated, having won all 18 games played.

My girl, the defenseman, was a different story. Her team came into the final in second, but only by goal differential. They lost two games, but did better in total points than the other teams, making it to the championship game playing against a team that swept the tournament...until her game. They dominated from the first face off. She blocked at least 12 shots, was relentless at taking the puck away from any unfortunate boy that came within 3 feet of her. She scored one goal with a hard shot from just inside the blue line, and had 3 assists. They took the banner from the strongest team there with an 8-2 final score.

It was worth every moment...and dollar spent so far.
