The proposal is that the new h2g2 will () have a charitable Foundation as part of the whole caboodle. Complicated to explain right now as it is in the beginning stages of being formulated. Basically the intention of the Foundation is to promote world-wide literacy in all sorts of ways, including the literary aspects here in h2g2.

Some of these challenges could be in the form of writing prompts, some may be dedicated to writing fiction, poetry, or for the Edited Guide. We envisage schemes where we can host collaborative writing, for the Guide, or encourage writers to confidently produce Journals.

AND we would really want one nice big outward facing comp to coincide with when we think h2g2 is finished transitioning and ready to take over the world....
Anyway, what we need volunteers for is partly to think up the challenges and sort out () a page describing them (I envisage that people could leave links to their entries under this page so everybody could go and read them and, hopefully, comment - not in a peer review kind of way - although we will have EG challenges so that would be in a peer review kind of way, but more generally).
But we also need people to participate regularly, both in submitting and in commenting and answering questions, too I suppose.
And in admin for the comps when we get there.

Nick Bostrum, evolutionary philosopher at University of Oxford, wrote in an essay in 2004:
"The extravagancies and fun that arguably give human life much of its meaning—humour, love, game-playing, art, sex, dancing, social conversation, philosophy, literature, scientific discovery, food and drink, friendship, parenting, sport—we have preferences and capabilities that make us engage in such activities...."

To Nick Bostrum's list I add:
creation and use of technology, adventure, husbandry, community service.

Hey M A N - I just fell across your journal - what an incredibly lovely discovery. It's 3.20 am here and really I should be asleep, but I just wanted to thank you for posting the journal, and especially for the Bostrum quote and your own addition.
I'd love to have more time to discuss all these things with you, when I am less nearly fast asleep.

Welcome, Lanzababy.
Mmm, yes, the Bostrum list was the main part of what I had in mind. It's a jot list reminder to self, really, starting from what you and Solnushka said:
• the intention of the Foundation is to promote world-wide literacy in all sorts of ways, including the literary aspects here in h2g2.
• we need volunteers... to think up the challenges and sort out a page describing them.
From that, the beginnings of my idea – list all the extravagances and fun that arguably give human life much of its meaning.
There's another part to the idea which is firm enough in my mind that I didn't need to jot any reminders and that is the world-wide aspect of it. I'd very much like to see h2g2 Researchers from Asia, India, Africa and S. America. Even if the language of communication is English I want info about the cultures to be part of HooToo in the style HooToo at its best can do well.
It's a longer-term dream (than the present transition to NooHooToo) to which I need to give much more thought. Currently my thinking keeps returning to the fact that The Foundation is NOT Aunty Beeb and neither is NPL and this necessarily changes the HooToo remit.
