On Monday, I heard of John Peel's passing. As Andy Kershaw said of him, he was the most important person in British rock music today. Many bands owe their existence in the public eye to Peel. Rest in peace, John.
On Wednesday, our little dog, Rowan, reached a point where his life was no longer satisfying for him or for us. His legs no longer worked properly, and he was suffering significant pain. It was time, and we made that long, last trip to the vet's surgery. Fifteen years is a long time, now he's gone.

Well, I think you know I had to make the same decision with my old cranky cat Lua a few weeks ago . . . deciding *when* was the hardest thing ever. It still hurts a lot, I still miss her terribly.
I had twelve years with Lua. So I know what you mean when you say fifteen years with an animal 'family member' is a long time. There are almost no words for it.
I was lucky that the vet came to my home to administer the lethal injection. But I'm sure Rowan felt comforted that his family was there with him. And dogs are more comfortable about going outside their house.
In any case, you did the best for Rowan. Not waiting until he was suffering too much. If it helps, I think I know how you are feeling, since I only lost Lua very recently.
