Anyone got an idea for a new book for me to read? I'm in between books and too lazy to think of one myself...
Hmmm.
pAt Posted Jun 12, 2000
Do you only like science-fiction stuff ? Some Milan Kundera novels aren't bad at all, if I only knew the titels in English...
Hmmm.
Princess Bride Posted Jun 12, 2000
Yes, read all the hitchhiker's stuff, and I will read almost anything, not just sci-fi, although that is my favorite. Milan Kundera? What genre is that?
Hmmm.

Have you read any Robert Rankin? I can highly recommend his books - very surreal and off the wall, a cross between hitchikers, red dwarf and Terry Pratchett really is the best description I can give!!
1) Nostradamus Ate My Hamster (ISBN: 0552143553)
2) Armageddon: The Musical (ISBN: 0552136816)
Armageddon is actually a trilogy I think. I'm still trying to collect and read all his books, but he keeps churining them out quicker than I can afford to buy them!!
All are available at Amazon. Enjoy!!

Of course the Narnia series is great, but I haven't heard of any of the others. I'll have to check them out. Thanks for the ideas! Unfortunately I really must go do my homework.

I presume that you have read the bookof The Princess Bride?
William Goldman ISBN 0-7088-3978-9
Or you could always try the original version (if you can read Florinese that is!)
Iain Banks writes contemporary fiction as well as Sci Fi (note there is no "M" in his name this time but still the same writer)
Hmmm.
Princess Bride Posted Jun 14, 2000
Yes, I have read the Goldman version, and I think the Florinese version doesn't really exist. You see I wrote in for the love scene Goldman refers to, and got a letter back that was a form letter and gave various excuses, added onto over the years, why they could not send me the love scene. I have also never heard of Florin or Guilder (these are actual names of money though) and so I think it was all fake... But the book was still very good anyway...

Kundera is a Tcheck author that also writes books in french. He's pretty known in europe. His most known book is called "The incredible lightness of being" or something like that I just tried to translate it like this, maybe it's wrong (especially if the title doesn't make any sense to you ).
In French it's called "L'incroyable légéreté de l'être" in german, "Die unerträgliche Leichtigkeit des Seins".
He's got a funny style, pretty raw, and direct with once a while a few hidden Philosophical ideas.

Crescent Posted Jun 15, 2000
Was it made into a film, I seem to recall a film with a name like that?

Maybe. I don't know. By the way, I've got to apologize, I made an error it's "l'insupportable" Wich means the name of it is "the unbearable" or something like that.. I gotta find a German/english or french/english dictionary.

This is weeks later, but just thought I'd suggest:
Have you read all 14 of the original Oz books?
Have you read the "chicks in chainmail" anthology series? (kinda of a really funny cross between valkyrie warrior chick and science fiction and humor). they're edited by esther friesner. this has lots of women in long hair with cool outfits. *grin*
Have you read the Surveillance/Intervention/Jack the Bodiless/Pliocene saga/etc by Julian May? Incredibly good series -- there's about 9-10 books in all. I'm just now rereading them for the umpteenth time. The Pliocene books also feature women in long hair with incredible outifts. *grin* yet once again.
Have you read anything by Heinlein? If not, I'd suggest "Time Enough for Love" or "Friday."
have fun!

Princess Bride Posted Jul 30, 2000
Wow. Thank you all for all the ideas. Now I don't know where to start. I have read some of the original oz books but it's been years, and the rest of your suggestions, Mikey, I have not read. I'll get started soon!
