Dr. Who finale: reflections (SPOILERS)
Hoovooloo Started conversation Jun 19, 2005
And so, the triumphant conclusion to the triumphant return. Mostly brilliant, I would say.
Standout parts for me in the last episode were, in order:
The Doctor standing toe-to-toe with a Dalek and telling it that he is known, in ancient Dalek legend, as "the oncoming storm".
The Doctor rounding on the Daleks who've just tried to stop him interrupting the boss and shouting "BACK OFF!"... and they do!
The melancholic look on his face as he skids to a halt and turns to face the TARDIS just before he sends Rose home, as the truth dawns on the audience that no, in fact he doesn't have a cunning plan at all, actually - not at this point.
Mickey's question - "Why? 'Cos you're better than us?". It goes by in a second, but it hangs in the air.
The Emperor's intonation of the word "DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAlek." throughout.
The Daleks leaving the motherships in their *thousands* - no f**king about with shuttlecraft, they just leave, en masse. Awesome.
Ann Robinson spitting death at three Daleks before being beheaded. BBC Wales... well done.
"Rodrigo. He owes me a favour, never mind why." Oh yeah? I can imagine...
Lynda standing in the room watching the door being cut open, then realising there are three Daleks OUTSIDE the station, one of which clearly says "Exterminate", but you *don't hear it*. Lovely.
The bizarre concept that three people, in full sight of the dwelling places of at least a thousand people, could attach a tow truck to a phone box in broad daylight and have not ONE, single passerby inquire what the f**k they're up to, or for that matter indeed even pass by.
The look on Rose's face when she catches the Dalek's beam in her hand.
Rose's face generally - she had more than a slight look of Kylie Minogue I thought, mainly because she looked like she was made of gold.
And finally, the bizarre logo on the back of her jumper - she's just saved the universe by practically becoming god, but the reverse shot of her puts the "Punky Fish" logo centre screen and I couldn't take my eyes off it. "Punky Fish"???
Oh, and finally finally - David Tennant *already* looks good, in that he *already* seems to have more than a hint of a young Bill Nighy about him. So... bring on the Christmas invasion, and for that matter the (one hopes) feature-packed DVD boxset.
SoRB.

...and slightly more seriously:
'Punky Fish' was a popular greb brand when I was Rose's age. It seems odd for her to be wearing it though, as I wouldn't take her for a punk.
Loved the Daleks streaming out of the ship too, although as has been said elsewhere, if they've got bombs big enough to torch Earth, why not bomb the Gamestation?
The breaking into the Tardis scene- maybe it's early morning? Otherwise half the local population would be sticking their heads out the local boozers at the sound of a damn great tow-truck revving like that.

Punky Fish is one of the bigger clothes emporiums in Camden Town these days, and unlike their more exclusive and more expensive rivals Cyberdog have succeeded in making their user friendly club-wear available all over the country.
It seemed just about right for Rose, to be honest. Not *too* expensive, but still a hint of street cred to it.
And of course it was red...
PS, welcome back, you miserable old git.

Ah. Clearly they've moved on since my youth. I'm sure they used to do skater-type hoodies and long sleved t-shirts. Mind you, it was a skaterish top, wasn't it.

Well, skater/dancewear whatever. We're clearly talking about the same thing.
Kind of an irony considering Piper's first pop video was one of the first to feature skater boys...

It too noticed the "Punky fish" maybe the new arc for next season rather than Bad Wolf.
RTD has mentioned there is going to be something similar in the next season and it has been seen already.
The episode did include the only time I have been glad to hear the words "You are the weakest link" I *almost* forgive RTD for the first twenty minutes of Bad Wolf just to set that up.
Ah yes, the Darth Vader moment.
A friend (and a few others) have mentioned the likeness between DT and Richard 'The Hamster' Hammond. Make up your own Top Gear gags.
DT isn;t using his scottish accent and so I doubt whether we will see a Dr in a kilt. Presumably it would drive Capt Jack mad if we every see him again (spoiler free zone so no comments please).
Also, 'the' kiss. No not Rose and Jack or The Doc and Rose but The Doc and Jack. Depending on which channel this is shown in America it could alienate alot of viewers. Queen dragging up in the "I want to break free" screwed them for years.

I knew I meant to mention something- that's a slight retcon saying that the Daleks call him 'The Oncoming Storm'. According to the NAs, that's the Draconians' name for him. The daleks call him the 'Ka Faraq Gatri', or 'bringer of darkness'.
Key: Complain about this post
