Allow me to share a little titbit about Franz Kafka when he concieved his idea for Amerika. smiley - smiley

His friend in Germany asks what he knows about America and he says, "I know the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, and I always admired Walt Whitman, and I like the Americans because they are so healthy and optimistic." So with only this knowledge Kafka goes on to write a more inspiring three hundred page smiley - book about a land and language and culture he envisioned in his head. Granted, he tried to emulate Dickens but still, it's tremendous and so amazing. If I had that simple noble courage.

I first met his works through the bizaarely and yet tear-wretching Metamorphosis last year, and after loathing the sister for some time, continued to read the misfortunes of mister [Herr] K. in the Castle. I cannot get a hold of the Trial yet but I want to read it during the summer where I will devote myself to him, o friends of the ABC Cheers, and I will blither concernign Vonnegut another day. smiley - biggrin

Have read Metamorphosis and The Trial. I loved both of them. It was some time ago. The Trial can send you mad, but in a wonderful way. The convolutions go on forever, there is never anything to hold onto...anyway I'll let you read it. smiley - smiley
