Well, actually... I bought my current desktop from a small company that specializes in building their own gaming computers - so no, I've no idea about most of the inside. The box it came in says 'ace' and 'Code: Clubs4' and 'PSU: 480W' (yes, I still have it).
So most of the time, I don't have a clue, but try all sorts of thing and so far, I've managed to get everything to work except Skyrim. When I installed the game, it updated a lot of drivers as part of the installation but now, several months later, something seems to be past it's 'best before' date. Will check sound options.

Well, I recognize the PSU part of that. It's your power supply. The rest, I don't know. If the company you bought it from still exists I would contact them to see if you have a sound card that is separate from the motherboard or not and proceed from there.
