Once a Student......

Hi. I was searching for references to Glossop and came across your entry. I'm thinking of writing an entry on Glossop since it is such an exciting place...yes, I am talking of Glossop!!!

Anyway, I live in Dinting but will soon be living in Manchester when I go to University in September.

I'm new here and am finding it quite strange. Any reccommendations? Anyway, be sure to check out my article on Glossop when it's finished. I'll let you know!

Hi Once...
Welcome aboard!
I'll certainly have a look at anything you write on Glossop smiley - smiley

If you're new around here there'll be ACE's and people visiting you soon to welcome you to the site and suggest a few places to go. But I think the best advice is just to browse around, get a feel for the place, have a virtual smiley - coffee, smiley - ale or smiley - donut at one of the many cafes and bars, have a look at peer review to see what other people are writing and generally just get stuck in. Online communities don't come much friendlier than this one.
Oh and if you're interested in meeting a few other Northern researchers there's a meet up in Manchester on Saturday (August 4th) at the Trafford Centre. For details click here http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A535907

Well, I'm reconsidering my pledge to write a piece on Glossop, certainly for the meantime anyway. I had a look at some of the rules for getting something published in the Edited Guide and it seems quite restrictive. What I had in mind was just my perspective on Glossop and some of my experiences here...such as pub crawls in the Summer and the fact that we seem to be ignored by the whole world!!!

Anyway, it would seem I'd have to do some sort of history on Glossop, which I'm not really qualified to do. I've a lot of experience of writing historical pieces, but not about Glossop. If I do a piece, it will just have to go to the non-edited guide.

About meeting up at the Trafford Centre...I've certainly got nothing planned and the idea seems interesting, but I'm not sure if I'll go. After all, I've only been here a day and I don't know anyone really.

What better way to find your way about!
Come along it should be fun. I have talked with a few of the people who are going but I've not actually met most of them.

And I've not met any of them - yet. Looking forward lots to Saturday though (With only a few minor nervous tics at the thought of throwing away my anonymity. Will there be pictures? Can I hide from all the cameras?).
Please reconsider reconsidering that pledge. You really don't have to write the history of Glossop. You could do a 'How to have a good night out in Glossop' sort of thing or a 'What puts the gloss in Glossop' approach or just write about your favourite pub or any other bit of the town. Edited entries really don't have to be terribly serious, massive projects just so long as there's true facts in there you can write it how you like. Anyway, I want to read it whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for asking, but I must still decline. Although intrigued by the idea, I just don't feel altogether comfortable with going just yet. Hopefully, when you do the next one, I'll be available as I'll be living in Manchester by then.

I'll let you know when I've done the Glossop article. The truth is, I'm working on a huge entry at the moment and it is taking up all my h2g2 time. When that's done, I'll do Glossop smiley - biggrin
