Last night I went to the "music school" concert, where the eldest grandson was playing a couple of tunes on the recorder. I think it may be my least favourite musical instrument, closely followed by beginners violin, of which there were several. It's a good job I'm not trying a dry January.
The grandson liked his robocopter from the market in Hong Kong and had a good party with a Star Wars cake. His other presents all seem to be fiendishly difficult construction toys - far too complicated for his granny anyway.

Get Recumbentman to start them on the ukulele - that's the latest thing for musical beginners, and much nicer on the ear.

oh I love the recorder, the Descant not so much, but it is pretty easy to get the hang of and you never forget it. (When I've finished studying I may go back to playing my recorders - I like the ginormous ones best). Plus IIRC, the fingering for one of the versions is the same as for the Clarinet so once you get the hang of the reed you're already one up.
