Is it funny? I've taken the next step, incorporating links to other pages in the subject. It's a real blast!

There's a restriction to HTML in forums: it only works in the SUBJECT of a message.
There are also some things to remember when using it:
If you wish to get rid of the orange box around an image, remember to use the border="0" parameter in an -tag. And make sure the pictures are of reasonable dimensions. The width of the revolving "Festival" banner that I've tried is actually a little too much already. I'm sorry for that.
If you wish to link the subject to some other page, then take the following precautions:
Make sure the subject also contains a non-linked word, OR make sure that it is NOT the *first* message of a thread. If you fail to follow this rule, the thread may become impossible to read or reply to. After all, if one clicks the subject-line of that thread in the list of conversations, one will no longer be taken into the thread, but instead be lead into the page it is linked to.
A fully linked thread can't be accessed from a list of recent postings either, so be careful.

One more thing to remember: even when UNLinked, a tagged subject (such as an image) on a *new* thread can make the thread inaccessible as well.

Judging by the mess in some of forums I've seen I wouldn't expect this feature to last very long - I'd guess the block on html in subjects has fallen out by accident.
Someone's already stuck a midi in the top of a thread on DNA's homepage that plays whenever the homepage or any forum attached to it is open - I think someone will notice

Yeah, I already expected this to be an error. And I'm afraid I have to admit that I was the first one to stumble upon it. The idea to add pictures wasn't my idea, but as soon as a font-altering tag seems to work, an -tag is bound to follow.
I would say we shouldn't wait for someone to notice. We should ALERT someone to this "feature" to make sure it stops sooner rather than later.

Hurry

Thanx, Bruce. I think we've then done all there is to be done.
Sorry

Please accept my apologies. I did not know it would cause such a problem - I did not know that the subject message infects outside where the message is posted. Will you manage to get rid of all old html tags? The spinning face and logo are getting rather irritating (I've already removed the music). I think it is for the best to remove HTML as it is easy to abuse - much easier and more dangerous than I thought. Imagine someone put a Javascript or redirect where I put the music.
Once again, sorry for unveiling it.
Sorry

I *could* ofcourse move or rename that spinning Logo, but a fact is, that it's loaded from my regular homepage, where it's used as a *banner*. I'll have to make major adjustments to that page to get rid of it. I'll see what can be done, about it. Any other HTML-menace is out of my hands
HHHMMM?
Olli Posted Nov 20, 1999
Skeleton,
How did you manage to unlink the festival logo? it no longer points to your website,
thanks
Sorry
Bruce Posted Nov 20, 1999
LOL - I have refrained from mentioning the javascript thing for fear of what might happen
Based on past experience I'd expect h2g2 to change the site so that the actual html code is displayed as text, possibly rearranged to be invalid, where now it is interpreted. You should probably expect all these forums to start looking really ugly & messy when they change it.
