The java / ActiveX debate

From recent experience looking for a job placement for my course at uni, i have found that most companies i have seen use Microsofts COM and DCOM. As Java is the emerging technology, and as i've been told is better than the ActiveX components, I fail to understand why companies don't use java and it's API's.

Web surfing

Has anyone ever really thought about how much rubbish there is on the net? I mean.. I don't agree with people who think that most of the stuff on the web is rubbish, but just a few things are not worth being up there. And the fact that web search engines only cover a small portion of the web is ok. but web directories, where you are listed if you send in a link or request i don't agree with. All the web should be searchable, with the search you use defining how much relevant material you find.#

I'm sorta new to this stuff so here goes 
I go to Uni everyday at QUB, Belfast. I'm there now in fact, writing this
journal. Basically just surfing the web, and patiently waiting for
my friends to turn in for the day.
Glad I didn't have to get the train in to uni this morning(it takes 50 mins)
I live in Crumlin(12 miles from Belfast) which is only 20 mins by car
(wish I could drive - failed test once already, don't feel like doing it
again)
Feel like posting something about NIR(Northern Ireland Railways) and their..um..
