I'm just in the middle of having some birthday for breakfast. The director of the play I'm in made me a gorgeous one with lemon and maple syrup, and the whole cast sang 'Happy Birthday' to me at the rehearsal last night. It was lovely.
It almost made me... happy.

Well, I guess that just as well as being allowed to be grumpy when we want, surely we must be allowed to be non-grumpy every now and then - how else would people be able to tell the difference?

Actually I am having a very hoopy day. My 
season ticket for the 2003-4 season arrived in the post today, and I'm just listening to the great new Go-Betweens album I bought myself with some of my birthday present money.
And I've got another play rehearsal tonight, so I'll be among friends doing creative things. That's what I call a good day!

Aw, thanks, Annie! I'm really touched that you remembered!
I'm sure I will have a hoopy birthday. I'm going for a Saturday night out with some of my friends from the University theatre group later on today. The fact that bright, creative people young enough to be my children want me for a friend makes growing older seem like no big problem at all. I'll celebrate my survival, my growth and all the great people I've met so far in my fifth decade!
