h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Hey. You posted on my page, now I'm posting on yours. You actually manage to write and article a day? Yea gods. I've belonged to H2G2 for a month now, and I've only written one. Of course, I am 14 and have much less general knowledge of subjcets that someone hasn't already written on. Oh well. Now I"m in awe. Goodbye.

Awe, pfft.

You gotta remember I write for a living. So turning out a small article a day for H2G2 is just a warm-up of sorts. Of course, the problem is that sometimes I get so interested in chicken fat or technetium or whatever that I don't want to go off and write boring old computer stuff.

When I was 14, I'd never even touched a computer, unless you count a pocket calculator that was really too big for most pockets. A scary thought.

I think I attempted to post a response to that last night, but for some reason it didn't work. It might've had to do with the fact that I was kicked off the computer right after I hit the "post message" button. Were my networking abilities of better quality, I could probably go online at my own, faster computer 'til all hours of the night, but no such luck.
I really can't imagine growing up without computers. I've been ounding on a keyboard since I could crawl, and I've had my own computer since about age six.

Oddly enough, I've been trying to imagine what growing up with a computer might be like. (We might have kids someday; you never know). Or growing up in a house full of computers, for that matter (there's about six or seven of 'em here now). I expect I would have surfed more and read less if I'd had early access to the internet. Who knows what other differences that might have made?

What's keeping you from being online till all hours of the night?

Well, we've always had at lest one computer. If you count the computers at both of my parents' houses, then now we have about 6 of them working, and 2 or 3 more in closets.
I don't think that access to the web has affected my reading THAT much. Having something like 4 hours of homework a night has though. The internet involves a lot more interaction with interesting people at an earlier age.
There are several reasons I can't stay online 'til all hours of the night. The most obvious is that I have to wake up at 6:00 for school every morning. The other is that, because we have a cable connection, I will not have web access on the better, faster computer that I bought a few months ago and is in my room. As soon as I can, I intend to network this computer, in my mother's bedroom, to the one in my room. I just need another network card. Until then, however, I have to get offline at 10:30 every night. It seems a little silly, because no one goes to bed until at least 11:30, but that's the system, and I can't change it.

Ah, those parental units. They can be quite the nuisance.

Yep, sounds like networking is the answer to your problem. (If indeed limited H2G2 access is a problem). Of course then you'll just be TEMPTED to stay up all night. But really, we're a *good* influence

I no longer have to get out of bed for school -- now I get out of bed to feed all the animals. This happens at sunup. At the moment, I have the luxury of sleeping in till 7AM...however in the summer I'll be getting up at 5AM again, thanks to the longer days.

I always wake up at sunup, if not earlier. I cannot sleep when it's light out unless I have been up until aproximately 4:00 am. In the summer, when I don't have to, I do wake up at 5:00 am. Winter's a problem though.

Ah, you sound rather perfectly suited for farm life, then. Whether farm life would suit you is another question entirely. I've been enjoying being able to sleep in till 7:00 or so these days -- knowing I'll be up at 5AM in the summer. Of course, sometimes the roosters crow at 5AM even in the winter, just to keep me on my toes.

Evil roosters. I always find that I will hold a grudge against anything that gets me up before I want to wake up. My alarm clock is the focus of much hatred.
