I found from the PR thread that you hadn't time to incorporate the changes/additions/subtractions requested, so I've done them allsmiley - tongueout and even found an excuse to link to Cleethorpessmiley - blushbut if it's too gratuitous I'll switch it for another town/county or just make it general.

Thanks, love! I did actually want to rewrite a lot of this, but I never got the chance. I won't go as far now, because I don't really have time at the moment, but I want to add some stuff about hawfinches and engraving. I'll give you a couple of extra paragraphs when I get chance, but I'll be too busy for at least a couple of days.

I don't like that footnote; it seems a bit odd to point out one instance of a Hawthorn Close when there are so many.

I've never bothered with em-dashes, because the Eds don't and I don't think there's a need to be that formal on websites. If you're going to be absolutely technically correct and use them, though, there shouldn't be a space on either side.

Thanks for the card - that was very sweet of you smiley - hugsmiley - smooch

Google 'em dash' and you'll find the correct usage is no spaces. Here's an example:

http://www.grammarbook.com/punctuation/dashes.asp

A266131 actually confuses things:

'To an extent, parentheses (( )), semicolons (smiley - winkeye, dashes (-) and footnotes2 are interchangeable (okay, we can't do real en-dashes and em-dashes, so hyphens will have to do).'

and the em-dash is barely used in any of the Help Pages. So I don't bother smiley - smiley

You off to bed already? Good grief - sleep well!

I get what you're saying, but have a look here:

I'm not doing this off my own bat, as it were, and I don't want to argue, I'm just trying to help smiley - smiley

Check the article he did and you'll find spaces either side of the dash, and it's how I've been working. IMO I prefer thatsmiley - 2cents

I really think this needs sorting so we're all doing the same thing, or people will be going round undoing the others' fixing, which I can't even contemplatesmiley - headhurts

Personal preferences don't matter, though. If I was start putting spaces before exclamation marks, for example, because I thought it looked nicer, that would be wrong.

I'm not really interested in the debate either. Typesetting rules are ancient, and I think the web will set its own standards of correct punctuation in time just as the early typesetters did. But if we're going to use typesetting rules, we should at least apply them correctly.

I'll go and let TRiG know smiley - ok
