Lurking on the FFFF - but not particularly wanting to get involved again - the contemporary neurological view is (roughly) 'consciousness doesn't exist; we only think it does'. For example - see Susan Blackmore's comments here: A10475147
Also, there's Daniel Dennet's now classic book, 'Consciousness Explained' - dubbed by some 'Consciousness Explained Away'.
So...in a way, your're right...sort of. Until recently, the view was that thought could exist without language - and there's lots of experimental evidence for non-linguistic cognition. Nowadays, the view is more that there's no big difference between conscious/linguistic thought and unconscious/non-linguistic.
That's all. Tra.
