I wish I could have actually fixed something, rather than just confirming the problem.
I checked the cheap motherboard that was in the PC I sorted out for my dad, but it doesn't use the right kind of memory to be much use as a replacement (It uses plain SDRAM, not DDR).

I hope you have some luck with the guy you bought the board from. Do let me know if there's any way I can be useful.

You were great and even though it still isn`t working, at least we now know what the problem is. That has helped us a LOT.... believe me! (J says to tell you thanks a lot.)

He also says to tell you that he`s got a lot of SDRAM also, so if you let him know what the motherboard is that`s in your Dads computer... he`ll look into it.

To be honest, I don`t think that we`re going to have much luck with the chap we got the board off, but one never knows.

We really appreciated it so if theres ever anything we can do for YOU, just call.

The board in my dad's machine is a Matsonic 8308.
Though the 8308 does use SDRAM, I think the 8318 is a DDR version.

It is a micro-ATX board with onboard sound/video/network/modem, but the manufacturer isn't one of the larger ones, so I guess availability may not be wonderful.

I expect that most socketA boards from other manufacturers would support 1.3GHz Durons, and would likely work as well as the Matsonic one, but not having built any PCs for a couple of years, I'm not really current on manufacturers to go for or to steer clear of.
