Your turn to host some chit-chat.

I just had to have a long header smiley - winkeye.

I see your Ry Cooder article is soon to be accepted. Ry Cooder played on Eric Clapton's Money & Cigarettes album, as I think I already said. Shame I can't tell who's playing what *^_^*

You would have been enormously gratified (and might be yet) to see my reaction when I came back to my home page and spotted that post header, and did a double-take. Wha-a-a? You are always ahead of me smiley - smiley

Yeah, I saw the article get renumbered. I want to send you some Ry tracks on a CD: you won't like everything hes done (or you might surprise me yet again), but I know some of the stuff will definitely rock you, especially from the music he's done for movie soundtracks. He can be a folkie or he can rock heavy. There's one track on his movie music compilation where some of the accompaniment is the sound a garden hose makes when you whirl it over your head, and it sounds like they cut a few lengths to get the notes right. Wild!

Ry is also master of mandolin, so if you hear that on any Clapton track you can bet it's Ry.

Anyhow, you just demonstrated conclusively that a post header can be a maximum of 255 characters long. smiley - bigeyes

And, get this, if I hadn't have accidently put the extra 'o' into 'losing' then we'd have been able to see the word 'head'. Well, looks like we need a new thrad! smiley - winkeye.

Ok, only joking.

These guitar guys can really surprise, can't they? Bob Dylan getting booed offstage for using an electric guitar? Who's have thought it?
As you know, the only experience I have of Cooder is on the Clapton album, so I'd appreciate the experience. I need new material drastically!

They got a mandolin on Tubular Bells (yup, I've listened to it all the way though!). What is it?

Tubular Bells! I used to listen to that all the way through while I was studying (same as you, probably). The late Viv Stanshall >sniff<

I'm looking all through my collecton for really offbeat surprise-you kind of stuff. The instructions for making a CD look pretty straightforward -- I mean, I already use them to archive data, like all my Billy work, but I never assembled a CD out of lots of OTHER CDs before. It'll be as much fun as making tapes for a party smiley - smiley

Anyhow, a mandolin is very small and kind of like a lute. I think it has 18 strings, 3 for every one on a guitar. Sounds kind of plinky, which can be a good effect in funky blues.

Viv Stanshell? Who he?

What, you copying stuff from CDs onto a new CD? Sounds hard. Obviously, it requires certain expensive machinery. Grr.

Now all i got to do is find TB and try to remember what the mandolin sounds like! Luckily dad's got this CD which has the last 6 minutes of TB, and Mr O gets rather excited whenhe introduces the mandolin. Tomorrow, I guess...

Viv Stanshall is the voice on TB! He did lots and lots of voice tracks, like Peter and the Wolf and some other famous album whose name escapes me... and of course he was a member of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (Intro-Outro?) which appeared in the movie Magical Mystery Tour.

Hardware -- got two CD units in the older machine, and one's a writer. I got it because of the large and valuable images I was starting to take on, like Billy and all my stuff on the US Marines. And then it turned out I could also use it to make audio CD's. Which, now I think of it, would also be cool for the car.

I think there's only two CDs I got that I haven't listened to for a while. I NEED more stuff!

I used to adore putting my favourite songs onto cassette. I had seven home-made compilation tapes. And by my standards now they all suck. So I've recorded over them all (well, getting through them) with stuff I got on CD. Oh yes I am.

I think I came off at about 11-30pm, or something. I can't quite remember.

Peta gave links to some of the oldest pages on h2g2. Wow, they are old. But remember the Wasted Years song...

After that, I was showing my dad how the search engine works. He's been looking around h2g2 before, apparently. Oo-er! smiley - bigeyes

Good morning Mr. Atkin (Sr)! Your son's done a whole lot that you could be quite proud of! Don't mind about the other little bits here and there -- youthful exuberance.

Oh well, I'm sure he knows better than me. Guess you're OK this morning. Well, afternoon already for you.

Wow, huge title smiley - bigeyes

Hello 'Lil and Mike, I hope you don't mind me butting in like this, but I was browsing and saw the thread and well, I was being nosey!
Ry Cooder as well as being quite an acomplised musician is also the producer of the aclaimed Buena Vista Social Club album of traditional Cuban music. He went out to Cuba and recorded the artists in their own settings. The artists themselves aren't young people, but they have been making music for most of their lives. The main singer I can think of (I've not got the album, but keep meaning to buy it) is Ibrahim Ferrez (I think it's how it's spelt) singing in Spanish. There was also a documentary movie made as well, directed by Wim Wenders.

That's all, later
Phil

I tried to reply to this last night -- what's worse, I thought I had. Oh well, another clutch of pearls of wisdom gone forever...

Cooder also got a Grammy for Buena Vista, and it was his second one, I think. I know he got an award for Talking Timbuktu.

I've just been listening to the movie soundtrack compilation cos I want to distill out a few tracks for Mike, and I'm struck all over again by his guitar work. He doesn't vamp, as a rule, he's so much the session man, but on this pair of discs you can really appreciate his originality and style.

If I could be bothered to dig the box full of tapes from out of the pile of CDs I'd probably listen to a Ry Cooder album I taped years back smiley - winkeye

Have you actually seen the movie? I'd like to but no TV means no video to watch!

I haven't been to the video palace in months, so I don't know whether it's come on the shelves. Where I live isn't exactly the cultural centre of the universe, so the local Blockbusters are heavy on the Jackie Chan, light on the social documentaries.

And that reminds me.
MIKE, RENT BARON VON MUNCHAUSEN!!!
