my interests

I'm tired of looking at this, so again, it's getting demoted to "journal entry."

i just graduated from carnegie mellon with a degree in physics and psychology. i was rejected from a number of ph.d. programs in neuroscience and biopsychology, so now i'm planning to work as a research assistant for a while.

i'm interested in neuroscience. more specifically, in the neural bases of "human" characteristics such as emotion, intelligence, and executive control (rather than low-level perception that is present in drosophila and nematodes). i question many tenets of modern psychology; for example, many psychologists do not think consciousness is a viable topic of scientific study. i might like to join christoff koch and francis crick in studying the neural bases of consciousness. i'm also interested in what is known as "parapsychology" -- psychological phenomena that psychologists have classified as paranormal. i think that there is such a poor understanding of brain function at the physical level that it's impossible to determine what psychological behaviors and perceptions are and are not physically possible.

i've been reading about buddhist philosophy so i'm trying to practice meditation and compassion. if you want to talk to me about that, it would be super cool. smiley - zen hey, there should be a lotus smiley.

okaaay...

well i posted the first part of this to the forum, and the second part sounds like i was in a leetle bad mood, so it's getting demoted to journal entry:

i'm interested in humanity. i think that for the most part, people reflect each other, returning anger for anger or kindness for kindness. this system is likely to reach an equilibrium (are we there?), converge, or diverge. it's similar to asking whether the universe will end in heat death or a "big crunch" -- will hostility escalate until we destroy ourselves, or will kindness unite us into an indestructable utopian society? alternately, are we stuck with things the way they are?

i'm interested in politics. go see fahrenheit 9/11 and then tell me what you think. i'm collecting opinions on michael moore's work in general. give me reasons to hate bush. and answer me one question: should i bail out on the states on the grounds that it's full of conservative, irrational and slow-witted hatemongers, or will i be disillusioned with whatever place i run to because i'm not yet able to leave the planet?

too much time on my hands

there's some seriously cool artwork in the picture galleries. i really liked more of it than i could reasonably put in my space without starting to look loony... not sure what i was going for with the ohm thingie, but it put together art, physics (ohm is a measure of resistance), and spirituality (ohm is the alleged sound of creation), and the question mark went with it so well because... well, i don't know what i'm talking about, it's all a mystery! i know it only makes sense in my head. i like it.

and hookahs are cool. smiley - zen
