Allergies
Posted Sep 28, 2000
This past summer and now into autumn my body's defense mechanisms have been on a constant red alert, even going haywire at times. Right now I'm ultrasensitive to several things, but I suspect that the real instigator is the molds and dust, to which I'm certifiably violently allergic. My one-level home has no attic or basement, and there is no such thing as a stucco exterior without a crack, according to those who know their stucco. My specialist broached the subject of allergy shots, but I'm having difficulty understanding the concept. Supposedly they inject you with the allergen to cause a reaction; then they try to calculate how many shots it will take over however long a period for your body to learn how to resist the allergen. The thing is, I'm getting the allergen at no cost from my house, so why should I buy the cow when I can get the milk for free?

The Guide
Posted Nov 12, 1999
A definition I particularly like is 'a device to direct the motion of something'. In other words the Guide should be, I believe, not a list of rules for life but a set of directions for living. It should not trumpet, 'Settle down here; this is all you need to know about this subject,' but should instead suggest, 'Here's an idea; see what you think about it.'

Ignorance
Posted Nov 12, 1999
Many people would define 'ignorance' as 'a state of not knowing, of being unaware'. My personal opinion is that ignorance is not so passive a thing. That definition might lead some people to believe that if a person is ignorant about something, it is through no fault of his own; he simply didn't know. I prefer to believe that ignorance is the act of ignoring, perhaps even a conscious effort to avoid understanding something of whose existence one can't help but be aware.

Remind me not to scream
Posted Nov 11, 1999
I received another memo today which began, like so many before it, 'As a reminder, you should...' I beg your pardon; I am not a reminder, nor do I pose as one. That is to say, I may perhaps be a reminder to someone of something or other, but I do not believe I fill that role in my work setting. I wish we could put that poor, lonely dangling modifier out of its misery.

Credentials
Posted Nov 11, 1999
Intellect is not diminished by the absence of a credential; it is only unilluminated. Likewise, ignorance is not diminished by the presence of a credential; it is only obscured.
