Arguments have been put forward that it may've been caused by a haemmorhagic form of anthrax, or even one of the haemorrhagic fever viruses like Ebola.
However, I didn't think this was the place to air such controversies.(I could put a footnote to say that there is a school of thought which argues that the'plague' which entered the country at Weymouth may not have been the disease we now know as 'bubonic plague'
