Hiya - long time no pirating!
I just thought I'd drop a line as there have been a few new applicants for pirate jobs and as a humble Head Chef I don't feel it's appropriate for me to hire and/or fire.
Yes, I know it's all gone rather quiet, but there's talk about setting up rival gangs (a so-called Guild of Pirates. Pah!) so I thought you should know. But then again, if you don't give a toss, just say the word...

So that's a commendation for the head chef for bringing this to your attention? Or confirmation that you don't give a toss?!

Ah, good. So you'll already be aware that young Ralph is lining himself as "Acting" Captain, then?

Yes, I see you do. And very fair your response was too. Pretty damn lenient, I would say.

too leniant you think?
Maybe I should give him a quick keel-haul or a few lashes with the cat'o'nine tails.

Weeeell - I just think that maybe promotion to acting captain whenever he feels like it is just a bit like patting him on the head and indulging his, lets face it, pretty damn treacherous behaviour.
*whispers* How about you instal him as acting whatsit and have me there to snitch on him if he gets idead above his station?
Oh rats, I've already done that, haven't I?!

Maybe I should give him a handicap too...
What the hey. I'll let him pick between keel hauling and the cat o' nine tails.

Hobson. As in choice. As in not really having one...

Hobson's Choice. It's a phrase, or a saying, a tradition or an old charter or something.

Tobias Hobson (c. 1544-1631) was a Cambridge stable manager who let horses. He insisted customers take the horse in the stall closest to the door (the next one up) or take none at all. Hence, a Hobson's choice is no choice at all. He was made famous by Milton. The phrase dates to 1660.
