The Penmare has gone!!
Have they done anything to Loggans Mill yet? It is a listed building as far as I understand, so they were going to have to convert it into something, but they weren't quite sure what. i.e. flats, hotel, leisure complex. I have some good photos of the inside and around and about before they built Lidl or started clearing the site. There is a lovely hidden waterfall right at the back.
Oh cripes! Another dispatch! Better go

Hello, Kif
You're up late - well on-line late anyway. I hope your journal entry and the fact you are still on-line does not bode that it has been a bad day for you.
Am around all night if you want to chat,
Take care UG

Phew! Glad all is OK
I believe that cafe in St Agnes is called The Cornwall Cafe, isn't it? I nearly always went there and chatted long and often to the owner about the origins of some of those cups and mugs. You bring it all back mentioning it - and Presingol! I used to replenish my candle supplies there, and buy much sought after Christmas presents for my candle-burning friends.
Some years ago, when they had a visitors pottery there, I took my (now 80 year old) Mum along because here lifetime ambition (ever since the Interlude with the potters wheel used to appear on television) was to have a go at a potters wheel.
It took her by surprise, but if she had known I had arranged it, she would have been too shy to go ahead. I introduced her to the potter and she sat down to have a go - she couldn't stop grinning for days!!! She attracted quite an audience because she became so involved in what she was doing that all shyness went and she thoroughly enjoyed herself. One of the few times I have managed to satisfy my Mum completely!
There is a garden centre on the Helston to Marazion coast road, have you discovered that one yet? It is better to approach it from the Helston end because the entrance is hidden coming the other way, and it is about a mile (two miles) out of Helston. There is a double roundabout at Helston, the road climbs a hill, passes the right hand turning to Hayle, with a garage on the corner, and then continues on parallel to the coast. It is down there. I discovered it completely by accident because it is tucked back a bit, and I just caught sight of the advertising board outside.
Ah well, it's Sunday night and I am back at work, so had better press on, always busy Sunday/Monday night.
Take care UG

Yes you are right it is called the Cornwall Cafe. I think the food was not up to it's usual standard because the owner had broken his wrist. He was a short balding man named Billy. he was very chatty and asked The Boss to help him move some postcards as if he had known her for ever. We went to Prestingol to buy candles. Even tho' we are knocking on a bit we like to light candles and play soft music some evenings.
I do know the garden centre you mentioned and we go there sometimes. They have a tea room called The Jungle Tea room but we don't eat there we prefer Wyevale.
Did you find a Bottle Brush for your Garden? I use to have one but it died off and I have never replaced it.
I think you would be sad to see Prestingol now. The potter has gone, much of the floor space is taken up with overpriced sweets and fudge. The candle shop is still lovely, but all the interesting odd ball knick knacks have gone. Like many other things it has changed and not for the better.
I am going to watch the footie in a minute and will be back on line either laughing or crying later!!
Take care

Hi Kif,
Yes, that's him, short, balding and chatty. You got one further than me because he never did tell me his name!
Nothing wrong with a bit of candlelight and soft music, whatever the age. It's good to relax like that, especially with BP! I am sorry to hear that Presingol has changed so much though. The last time I was down there the potter had gone, but it was essentially the same as before. I seem to remember when it first opened it was intended as a craft showcase, e.g. the potter at his wheel, watching the fudge being made through a glass screen, glass blowing, wood turning, making leather goods etc. etc. How it's changed!
The Jungle! That's it! I could only think of The Swamp and that didn't sound right for a cafe. I have occasionally eaten there, but, like you, I preferred the Wyevale. The other place I discovered, which is very good for children, so perhaps when dining with The Son and family, is on the road heading away from the Wyevale mini roundabout. That sounds clumsy. Er... Turn right out of Wyevale to the roundabout and then go left, climb the hill, past the Windmill, and about 2 miles up the road on the right is a restaurant, which has the air of being an old school hall I think - memory is a bit faded here. It's a carvery - if it's still there, that is. Just a little further on is a lovely farm shop.
No, no Bottle Brush. The trouble is, no one here knows it by that name and I don't know the correct term, but I think I remember that it did very well in salty air, so perhaps they are not sold inland so much because they will not thrive.
Guess your after the footie, but now we face Portugal, home team and all that.....
Better stop cluttering up your space. I'm having fun with the smileys but need to ask you questions. Will e-mail during the week.
Meanwhile, take care, UG

You can clutter up my space as much as you like. Anyone who loves Cornwall as you do is very welcome.
Yes we know the restaurant carvery, and it is still there but has changed hands. We went there last year and the food was very good. Did you know The Shire at Camborne.? It is the best carvery around and you have to book a couple of weeks in advance for Sunday lunch even in the winter it is so popular.
I know so much has changed here for the worst but you just have to drive off the main roads to find yourself in the timeless Cornwall that still has that ancient air of mystery about it. Lanyon Quoit, Men an Tol, Chysauster, Goldherring, The Fogous, Sancreed Well, wonderful places of calm which are unchanged down the centuries. Do you know Men an Tol? Three standing stones, the middle one is a ring stone and new born babies are passed through the hole from one parent to another which tradition says will prevent them from ever getting rheumatism. We passed both our babies through just after they were born. I don't think anyone does it now but the old cornish families did it when our boys were born. The Boss' family have lived in this area for hundreds of years, and her Dad only left Cornwall once in his life. He went to Plymouth to watch Argyle play and came back and said he didn't want to go to England again!!
I will try to find out the botanical name for the bottle brush as it may help you find one. It is possible as you said , that it will only grow by the sea.
I look forward to your e mail

Have just read your entry for 0100 Sunday. This seems an obvious question, but have you tried the Friends Reunited site? You could try the school he went to, or you could just type his name in and it will search the whole site for you.
There is also an "on the street where you lived" site under FU which may be of some help.
An ex-boyfriend alarmed me a bit by tracking me down through this sytem. He did not know where I had gone to school or anything else about me, so he just typed in my maiden name and there I was!!
If you are not subscribed to FU, then let me know via e-mail his full name and I will search for you.
Loggans Mill doesn't look any different. If you had swung the camera just a little to the left, you would probably have got our bungalow in the picture as well! More on e-mail tomorrow.
Take care UG

Hello Kif!!
You weren't on-line when I wrote that, or at least I don't think you had eyes!!
I am, regrettably, at work already because they needed some urgent changes made to some of the equipment and muggins here seems to be the only one around who knows how to do it in the time given (i.e. - not much!)
I was just having a coffee break. This is a great barn of a place, at the back of a trading estate, very lonely. The whole building "talks" and we have had a thunderstorm (my worst nightmare!), so I am trying to be very brave and just get on with the work in hand. But it is still an hour and a half before anyone else shows up, and I've been here since 1700
Sorry to hear you can't trace your friend. I must admit I have a couple I would like to meet up with again, but cannot reach them either.
Ah well, back to the frames, I suppose. I'll keep this open and pop back occasionally.
Hope the weather is better there than here

Hello Kif! You've got "eyes" so presume you are on-line.
I am having a bit of trouble typing today because someone ate an egg sandwich at my desk (yes, I know it's Sunday, and yes I am at work - long story)and managed to squirt egg-yolk all over the keyboard. Not being their keyboard, they only made an amateur attempt at cleaning it up, and it's left the keys all sticky
Has the weather cheered up any down there? It's abysmal up here. We had stairrods of rain and thunder and lightening yesterday, today it is as cold as November, windy, threatening rain and thunder all the time but not quite making it and generally miserable.
A question. Do you remember the Romney who used tolive in a caravan near and around the roundabout to Truro, the one with the garages on it and the turning to Presingol Barns? What became of him. On our last few visits down there I did not see him at all, and did not know if he had died or just moved on. I seem to remember some years ago his horse died and locals clubbed together to get him another one.
Hope all is well in your
Happy Sunday

hello U.G.
yes I remember the chap with the caravan well. He some times got as far down as the roundabout outside Pz. Sadly he died. I did hear that family turned up and his van was taken into a field and burnt which is an old romany custom.
The weather is good here now, the evening is crowning the day with sunshine and blue skies, but until about 5 o clock it was thick fog and drizzle.
We have had a pretty good day. Went to Marazion hotel for lunch and then popped into tesco's for a few goodies to scoff this evening while we watch the box.
The Boss is pretty good today we have to be thankful for every day we get without pain.
Some one your end needs a slap eggy sarnies indeed
more pics as soon as I can. I luv using my new camera
Take care
