Hi, thanks for reading River Daze! I appreciate your taking the time...
Yep, the fair city is exactly that, sometimes. Do you normally like shorter poetry? That piece is a tad long; normally my work is a bit shorter. Thanks again..

Are You Irish, Too?
PenJen Posted May 24, 2004
Hello there Learah (is this your real name? Love it!),
I see that you have just joined recently. I've been here nearly a month and it is quite addictive but really encouraging and fun with a lot of wonderful people and work out there. If you have any queries feel free to ask me or check out the Round Table and the Newbies Room for helpful info etc.
You seem to be getting the hang of it, no problem though, as I've bumped into you a few times posting reviews. You write really honest and helpful critiques I've also noticed! That is paramount for others to then review your work.
I reviewed for the first week before I felt comfortable and confident enough to post something on. Haven't looked back since. Can get really good constructive and honest criticism and feedback which is a bonus.
BTW are you from Dublin? I was a student there for 4 years. I'm from Donegal now residing in Derry, so there you go! I've bumped into a Monaghan man living in Belfast and another Belfast lad. Only Irish ones encountered so far.
RE: Your poem.
What I meant by 'was a bit too much for me', and I WILL be honest, as I endeavour to be in all critiques, was not the length but the language.
For eg: twixt, thus spake, that kind of auld English kind of thing. This is a very minor observation. I myself used to use the same language and tend to over-describe many a time. If you were to read any of my other poems you'll find I lean more towards graphic adjectives and brash words now. It's just a shift in my style that I'm playing around with. Although it is also a bit OTT, I know! Experiment then repent!
I hope that I do not not appear harsh or rude, as I really liked your poem and will be reading more once you have sent them up. So, keep writing and good luck. Hopefully I'll be reading some of your stuff soon. If you need any help in getting around just ask! See you around!

I am!

Hiya
Thanks for the reply, this site really is a tad daunting, but like you said, I am getting the hang of it. So, yes! I am from Dublin and it is great to meet a fellow-Irishperson straight away!
Don't worry about being honest with my work; bring it on. I'm aiming at a serious career as a children's author and need all the criticism I can get. If you like, I'll do the same in return for you
Can you give me a few pointers as to meet people? Is it to just keeping reviewing and commenting? I can do that, the only person I have spoken to here so far is you, though. But I only joined last night.
So what's your story? Tell me some of your favoured works and other people around here, so that I can start to settle in? And what are your own works that you like?
Thanks so much for replying, great to meet you
Learah

I am! Me too!

Us Irish girls gotta stick together!
How I got to meet people was from posting comments on lots of people's work from most segments, poetry, short stories etc. Also there is a poetry thread where people post up off the cuff rhyming pieces, one after the other. Check my coversations and click on 'The Amazing Poetry Challenge' and it will bring you right there. Also it is worth checking out the 'Round table' link on LHS. It brings you into chat forums and ongoing conversations on a variety of different writing-related subjects. I haven't really participated there as yet.
You can also appeal for feedback on your work, if you aren't getting much action, by going on the Newbee's site.
Most of the people in my 'Friends' box I've met through each of us reading the other's work and finding out what we liked. You tend to visit others posts more often. JustEve and JackSpratt are really helpful and friendly if you would like to post them a message in their folder. JackSpratt is also is into writing Childen's fiction. Thay are also normally about during the day. It doesn't take long to make friends. Everyone is very welcoming, so far the ones I've encountered. But for starters, have a browse around in the round table and the review circle. There are specific people there who will give you all the correct links to meet, greet, obtain feedback etc. Also, worth posting work in Beginnings as that is where most new members feel more comfortable to post as are guarenteed feedback. I hope that this is making some sense to you! I'm even confusing myself!
I compile Book Reviews for the local press and I haven't even started them and they're due for 9amTues. So, your other questions will have to wait until another day. But I'll be thinking!
Good luck and let me know how you're getting on. I see you have posted up further work. Will look at them tomorrow hopefully So, we'll speak soon. Gotta go and stop messing about on this site! 'Real' work to be done! Told you it was addictive!!
