I saw your posting on Gosho's thread and it had moved on quite a bit so I thought i'd come here. The Germans have recently updated that film, moved it to Germany and changed it around a little bit. But - given the subject matter and where it is now set - it is completely chilling.
If you can get hold of it, it's worth watching. (Die Welle - the lead actor is Jürgen Vogel)

Oh, I was searching for the German version, Die Welle, as I was writing that post. Actually the thing I saw that reminded me of it was the trailer for Die Welle. I saw the description on Reddit and assumed it was the version I saw as a teen. I replied to the Reddit article before I saw that the link was for the 2008 trailer for the German film. I was very impressed (I don't mind reading subtitles).
I then searched Netflix for both versions, the American "After school special" and the new German film. Neither are currently available. (I saved the German film so if it becomes available in North America, I'll see it.)
The very idea to me that they made a version for German audiences... And that it was very well reviewed there...
Well, in light of the current political atmosphere in the U.S. worries me.
There is no way that that film could play in the U.S. without a huge public backlash and that frightens me more than I was when I first saw it.
