Hello and welcome, Gwnethy! I understand your confusion, I had that when I first joined 9 years ago.
First off, this site, H2G2, isn't really a chat room, so you may not get a response right away. It's more like putting a note up on a cork board, and waiting for someone to respond. While a LOT of people will see your note, their reply may not happen instantly. 
The closest thing to a chat room here is at Miscellaneous Chat, MiscChat. Also, AskH2G2 is really good, particularly if you have any questions about *anything*. Someone is sure to see your question or comment and will reply pretty promptly. This is a worldwide site, and can have from 100 to over 1600 people online at once, as world time zones vary, and MOST researchers are in either the UK, Europe, Canada or the US.

This is like dialing random numbers on a telephone and expecting a pleasant conversation.
Gwnethy, I suggest you hang out in some of the more public areas.
A121096 Miscellaneous Chat is probably where you'll want to start out.
H2G2 is a friendly place, but take a look around first, get to know some people in context.

Oh, fine... just curious.
This isn't the first time a new researcher has randomly popped in on my space. I always find it odd. I always wonder what leads folks to such a random backwater of the guide as here.
