Minor correction. It was in the Petty Hates thread that his name is being Baader-Meinhoffed about.

There was one ghastly week in the 80s - remember it well... still recovering from it - when you couldn't turn the TV or the radio without the Thompson Twins being there smiley - headhurts

I just checked and was relieved to see that tomorrow nights episodes of Top Gear do not include the one where they put Ed Sheeran in their modestly priced car. I think I remember seeing him on the show once and expected BBCAmerica to rerun it this week the way things are going.

You may be about to get a reprieve. After all the hoopla about this story dies down of course smiley - whistlehttp://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/ed-sheeran-to-take-a-break-from-music-and-work-in-charity-shop-10468148.html

Elie Weisel.

This morning, on mu way to a dog park, I was listening to The Moth stories on NPR and a fellow mentions Elie Weisel in comparison to the neighbor he and his wife had while on vacation. I didn't catch the whole story, but basically this old man was in the next beach house and he annoyed the narrator as he cleared his sinuses loudly or when he continually talked about his dead wife in every conversation regardless of context. He and his wife begin fighting over his obsession with this old man "HE'S not ruining our vacation, YOU are!" Later the man mentions that his wife died in Auschwitz. Of course! Auschwitz!
At this point the narrator mentions Elie Weisel. The story continues with the old man getting free drinks and meals from people sympathetic to his sad story. At this point, the narrator begins to suspect he's lying, sneaks onto the sleeping neighbor's patio and confirms his suspicions when finds no numbers tattooed on the neighbor's right forearm.

And then I arrived at the dog park and turned off the car so I don't know how the story ends.

Just now I noticed on twitter that Elie Weisel died today.

Another weird one. I can confidently say that until maybe 90 minutes ago, I had NEVER heard of Gowanus, a neighborhood in Brooklyn.

I was watching a low-budget, artsy, independent film tonight about an improv group that gets a bit pulled apart when one of their members gets cast on "Weekend Live". The film is called _Don't Think Twice_ (Mike Berbiglia, Kate Micucci, Keenan-Micheal Peele). As the film begins their theatre is losing its lease and the improv cast is discussing neighborhoods they could move to and find a cheap theatre to rent. A joke[?] about Gowanus goes past my head. I take from context that it's a neighborhood in the area.

After the DVD ends, I pull up Reddit to scan a bit before bed, and come across this: "TIL the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, NYC is so polluted that unidentifiable new forms of microbiological life have arisen in its sludge".

Gowanus is a particularly Baader-Meinhof type of word/place name.

Pannetone...

I can confidently say I'd never heard of this "Christmas baked good" until today. That was the clue for a nine letter word on this morning's crossword in the local paper (the other nine letter word with the same clue was fruitcake).

Just now as I checked my twitter feed I see another hootooer retweeted something that included pannetone.

"Rompers"

I was familiar with this particular women's one-piece garment, but had never heard it referred to as such, previously only associating it with childrens wear.

Until this week when it was made fun of on a sitcom and a late-night talkshow.
