Dear Corrie - Found them again, I think. It seems that you can only use them if you use the default skin (brunel). I had changed to Goo and/or Alabaster and maybe those skins don't support smileys.... so they are back for the time being!! 
However, I was having fun thinking up words to go into the brackets and wondering what on earth would come up!! So, having solved one of life's little mysteries for today, I shall now 
and grab that

and hopefully the rest of the day will go like 
!! This site gets a bit complicated doesn't it!!
