The indigenous Irish *aren't* much of a mish-mash - they've been pretty static since neolithic times. But whatever they are, they're not Celts.

What about the Norman invasion, the people who became "More Irish than the Irish themselves"? I suppose there weren't that many, in purely numerical terms. All the Fitz names derive from that time, don't they?

Quite possibly. As I say...it just came up recently. But the Irish were Celtic speakers, without being ethnic Celts.
(I made a facetious speculative comment that the Irish may be related to the Basques. Googling further...this has been seem to put forard by the kind of people who look at these things)
