TRiG (Ireland) A dog, so bade in office

I'm on the train now for my first day (no classes, just an orientation programme).

I have a degree in chemistry, which I've never used (apart from one job which lasted four days). I've been working a decade as a web developer. So now I'm going back to college to do Deaf Studies, learning Irish Sign Language, Deaf history, and interpreting skills. And I'm very very nervous.

You can call me TC

Keep your pecker up. Sounds a brilliant idea and I wish you all the best with it.

What gave you the idea?

Great!
I heard once that the Irish deaf signing system used to be taught differently to boys and girls. This was to prevent them communicating, as it was thought undesirable for them to get to know each other and marry. Have you heard this?

This is true, and it has, to some extent, left a mark on the language to this day. Mostly in vocabulary, not grammar, I believe.

Truth be told, I'm completely self-taught in the job I'm doing, and have got as far as I can by that method. Which means that I'm stuck in a job at which I'm reasonably good but by no means great, with no great prospects for improvement, unless I go back to college to study it properly. But if I'm going back to college, I want to learn something in which I'm actually interested. And what little I know of sign linguistics absolutely fascinates me. Mostly, I'm seeing this as a way to study linguistics with a job prospect at the end of it.

I'm going to keep working one day a week in my current job. And full time over the summer. If I do get an interpreting gig, the work will likely be seasonal, so that arrangement may continue. And that would suit me. I do enjoy web dev.

First day of orientation went well. Mature students only this week, five on the Deaf Studies course (the other four female). I believe that there are twenty students in the class in total.

I knew a family whose parents were both deaf though the kids had good hearing. The parents were in a drama group and we went to see them perform. They got waves from the audience instead of smiley - applause
