A GuideML Question

I've made some cut-and-paste text boxes for researchers to easily add code (links, etc) to their pages, but I'm a bit baffled over certain behaviour.
Using or inside the textarea boxes, which is nice and neat and easy to follow, becomes far more complicated looking when run through GuideML. Is there anything I can do to ensure the code I've written appears as-written in my boxes?

As long as you use > and < inside the TEXTAREA section it will all work and they will end up as < and >
