h2g2 and IE3

Just thought you should know, on I.E.3 (well the version I use on lots of different computers at work) the front page of h2g2 just shows up as source code. It used to work up until about a week ago, now it just shows the code.

Does the same happen with pages other than the frontpage?

It's working now, but yes it was JUST the front page. But you've obviously fixed it. I'll let you know if it fails again.

Okay, it may just be certain computers in the BBC which have a problem with the front page, but something on it is making it show code again... and yes it's only the front page. Oh and it's only when you're not registered, otherwise if you're logged in it's fine.

Aha! That small piece of information tells me exactly what the problem is, and gives me an idea of how to fix it.

Thanks, Ant. I'll post here if I think I've fixed it, if you'd be so kind as to test the fix?

You'll have to wait until I get back to work on Monday to test it for you, but it'll be a pleasure.

Still not working, but thinking about it I shouldn't think you've fixed it yet, let me know when and I'll test it for you smiley - winkeye

Jim,
I thought this might be a related problem http://www.h2g2.com/forumframe.cgi?thread=22579&forum=563

& that you might want to know about it.

Jim, I'm the one having the problem that Bruce is referring to. And, having followed your thread, I can confirm that when I surf from my palmtop I'm not logging on as a registered user (no cookie on my palmtop). I'll have another go later and let you know if it's still happening.

The IE3 problem is that you can't see the front page if you're a not a registered user, can you see this? And if you can't can you see the other pages? (like for example you're own hompage http://www.h2g2.com/U51982 )

The problem is definitely related to whether you are a registered user or not, and not as I first thought because I'm surfing from an unusual operating system. Today I registered my palmtop (ie re-registered as an h2g2 user on a 2nd machine, and loaded the cookie) and now I can see the h2g2 homepage right as rain. The problem never occurred on any other page, including my user home page; all other h2g2 pages were fine.
I did have some problems re-registering simply because I couldn't get onto h2g2 in order to get the instructions for re-registering!!! Luckily, Bruce helped me out with the url which, for the benefit of anybody with a similar problem and miraculously reading this from a different machine, is http://www.h2g2.com/register.cgi
Question: Does this mean that for over a week no unregistered user has been able to view the h2g2 homepage? Have we had any new registered users recently??
