Why the hurry?

As I was exiting the subway on my way to work the other day, I
noticed that I was once again the last person onto the car, the last
person off the car, and the last one onto the escalator. I stood and
contemplated this, wondering why this was. And the only thing I could
come up with was that I was probably the only person in the city of
Toronto that was not constantly in a rush to get to work or back home
again.
I watch every morning as people try to cram their bodies into an
already brimming subway car, while I stand back and wait the 3 minutes
or less that it will take for the next one to come. Sometimes I
don’t get on until the 4th try, and this never bothers me in the least
. I later watch as 200 people all try to cram their way onto an
escalator that is only two persons wide. I watch as they all try to
maneuver themselves in such a way as to get onto that escalator just
a fraction of a second sooner than they would if they remained along
their present course. I find the whole thing rather comical really.

Once I’m finished with the subway trip downtown, which fortunately for
me only takes about 20minutes, I now am faced with a 15-20 minute
walk to get to my place of work. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s a
perfectly good bus that I can catch that can get me there in all of 5
minutes, but personally I prefer the walk, because as I’ve stated, I’m
not in all that much of a rush. I like to slide into my day slowly.
The frantic pace of the commuters tires me out just watching them.
I think more people should walk that little bit to work. I find it
clears my head rather nicely and gives me time to prepare for my day
better. I think people in general would be less stressed out with
their lives if they weren’t in such a hurry all the time.
